Relationship Agreements
Agree before you disagree
The beginning of a relationship is always lovely. Romance fills the air, and all is good with the world.
But what happens if – months or years down the line – there is trouble in paradise? What happens to your home, shared bank accounts, your car or any other assets you have?
Currently, if you cohabit with your partner, you may have no legal rights to claim against each other if the relationship breaks down so you may well be left with nothing. It’s wise to protect yourself against this happening, even though you feel it’s unlikely.
What’s a relationship agreement?
A relationship agreement helps to clarify ownership and expectations between you. It’s not necessarily legally watertight in comparison to marriage but having a formal agreement in place can reduce complications if your relationship breaks down.
Why consider a Relationship Agreement?
Though it may seem unromantic, I would always encourage you to have a relationship agreement in any of these circumstances:
- If you are purchasing a property together
- If one partner is bringing in the income and one partner is not working but looking after the home and domestic affairs
- When an issue is of particular importance to you. There are no limits to what can be included in a Relationship Agreement
Hopefully you will never need to call on this relationship agreement. But, if the unexpected happens, you will be incredibly pleased you created one and took steps to take responsibility for yourself and your future.
Why choose me?
With my forty years of legal experience (and two marriages) I’ve seen the best and worst of life and the people in it. I’ve also seen too many divorcing couples tearing each other apart to be starry eyed about relationships and the need to protect yourself from the ups and downs of real life.
One of London’s best divorce lawyers, I’m an experienced family lawyer and all-round source of wise counsel, support and advice around a variety of legal matters.
Work with me and you’ll quickly see that I am down to earth, practical and astute. I’ll listen to your current circumstances and will ask questions so I can get to know you and your specific situation.
Relationship agreements
If you’re struggling to agree on the contents of your relationship agreement, family mediation will open up discussion on all the options in a safe environment. This will help you decide what’s important and fair to you both when you come to draft your Relationship Agreement.
